clinical research data system
Clinvestigator
ux & ui analysis for clinical research data system
The stakeholders and developers of Clinvestigator were looking to improve their online software. Clinvestigator is a system used daily by research assistants and program specialists to input and track patient data and generate reports for research protocols that was designed and developed by a three Weill Cornell Medicine researchers. They built the software from a development standpoint, and were looking to improve the user experience and align themselves more closely to Weill Cornell Medicine.
about the project
ui/ux process
I was tasked with the assignment to conduct user research and provide a complete UI review of the software and of their public facing website.
My colleague and I conducted five 30-minute interviews over Zoom with researchers who regularly use Clinvestigator, and also have experience with a similar software called REDCap. We asked questions about how often they use the software, what they would like to see as improvements, and how successful they were at entering data and exporting reports.
In addition, I did a thorough UI review of the public facing website and the application itself. I provided screenshots of the application with clear annotations that also corresponded to a written document where I listed all UI recommendations. Finally, I provided a style guide and examples of specific interfaces that they could use to enhance their application.
My colleague and I documented in detail all the positive feedback and the common pain points the interviewees experienced. We then presented these findings to the stakeholders, and provided a written analysis combining the UI/UX recommendations and interview reports.
The stakeholders of Clinvestigator were deeply appreciative of the usability reports and findings we provided them. Ultimately it will be up to them as the developers and owners of the product, to implement our recommendations. It validated the fact that while their product is primarily considered more of a “service” rather than just a platform, there are certainly areas they need to improve upon to enhance the user experience.
